The Six Stages of Nutrition & How The Body Works

How do nutrients get into our very precious cells?

They have to pass through 6 separate and distinct stages or processes in order for our body to take of our cells.

Each stage is critical. Even the slightest breakdown could result in incomplete nutrition and poor health.

1.DIET is the first stage.

Diet is the FOOD we choose to eat. It also includes everything else we put in our mouth. From the time we are born to the time we die, we put into our mouths whatever we feel like having and whenever we feel like it, with no regard to the poor digestive tract. People treat their stomach as a “garbage container”. In computer jargon, when you put garbage in, garbage will come out. True? Look at the 6 Stages of Nutrition diagram.

You realise it’s a CHOICE we make many times a day and OUR CHOICE OF FOOD largely determines the state of our health. If we don’t get our choices right, then every other stage will be deficient.

Unfortunately nowadays, our choice of food is dictated by our tastebuds, our tongues, the texture, smell, and advertising peer pressure.

The body part involved is our mouth. Here enzymes begin the process of breaking down our food into swallowable portions. A good set of teeth are necessary in this 1st stage. The food slips down the food pipe or the oesophagus into the 2nd stage.

2.DIGESTION is the second stage.

Digestion is the breaking down of food into a form that can be absorbed by the body.

The digestion stage takes place mainly in 3 places.

  1. First is the mouth
  2. Second is in the stomach
  3. Third is in the duodenum.

Some digestion takes place in the small intestine.  Each will be discussed separately.

First, the mouth. Teeth macerate food into smaller sizes so digestive enzymes can break down the food into different components. The enzyme ptyalin is present in our saliva. It is in the mouth that ptyalin breaks down

CARBOHYDRATES into simple sugars.

Saliva also helps to lubricate and to bring the food to body temperature before it is swallowed down the gullet (oesophagus)and into the stomach.

As the food passes into the stomach, it goes through a check valve (hiatal valve) which should prevent food from going back up the oesophagus. When the food reaches the acid environment of the stomach, the saliva enzyme ptyalin is not able to continue the carbohydrate digestion

The stomach is a bag about the size of your fist, stretching to about 5-6 inches long and tapering in width. It sits just a little to the left of the body under the rib cage.

The stomach plays several roles and all are interrelated. It is a food hopper or storage reservoir for up to 4 ½ hours. The digestive action requires this time to work on PROTEIN.

It is a food mixer. Strong muscles contract to squash and pulverise the contents into a semi-liquid called chyme (pronounced kyme) when digestive juices mix with foods.

It is a sterilizing unit. Special cells in the stomach lining make powerful hydrochloric acid that kills many of the germs which comes via food. In simple words, stomach acid is one of the natural antibiotics.

However, it’s MAIN function is a digesting tube for protein. Here the protein building blocks – amino acids – are separated into individual units. And this is how it is done.

The stomach has a special enzyme called pepsin. Protein digestion begins through the action of this enzyme pepsin. But pepsin cannot exist without hydrochloric acid. This is an immensely important work and unless there is sufficient acid for the protein to become separated or broken down, then our bodies can be thrown out of balance.

Without pepsin and hydrochloric, acid proper protein digestion cannot take place. Because this acid is so essential, the stomach is known as an acid organ. Hormones and nerves also play a part for the proper functioning of the stomach.

The nutritional requirements of the stomach are simple. It needs food that will encourage it to produce hydrochloric acid. The best food is beetroot and beetroot tops and it needs to be raw. Not tinned. This is found in the Betaine Digestive Aid.

The results of a nutritional deficiency are many. When we were younger, the stomach was able to put up with our various food indiscretions. As we grow wiser, so does the stomach. It will rebel on us by giving us rude reminders, such as –

  • Wind – both north and south, sometimes “deadly silent”
  • Burning in the chest (heart burn)
  • Bloating (trousers/belts don’t fit anymore)
  • Bad breath (people are standing some distance from you)
  • An especially painful area in the chest called a hiatus hernia
  • Allergies (sniffly and running nose, a rash, sneezing or wheezy
  • cough)
  • Arthritis (aches and pains in the joints including gout)
  • Constipation and/or diarrhoea.

The third part of digestion takes place in the top of the small intestine called the duodenum. It is a C shaped tube, as you can see, and is separated from the smaller, tapering end of the stomach by the pyloric valve.

The nutrients in our foods come in complex structures bound up in proteins, fats and carbohydrates. It requires the cooperative action of 3 general types of enzymes to release those nutrients in a form that can be absorbed. These enzymes come mainly from the pancreas, the long tongue-like organ placed under the stomach.

Many enzymes are added to the chyme to continue the digestive process. This releases the nutrients from the food for absorption by the body. Enzymes in the duodenum work in a non-acid or alkaline environment.

It is here that fats are broken down by bile which the liver manufactures and is stored in the gall bladder. Concentrated bile is discharged into the duodenum by the gall bladder to help emulsify the fat.

In the duodenum carbohydrates are broken down into their simple sugar components. And the remaining work to be done with protein is also completed in the duodenum.

The names of the 3 general types of enzymes used in the duodenum are –

  1. Fat is broken down by the enzyme lipase into fatty acids
  2. Protein is broken down by the enzyme trypsin into amino acids
  3. Carbohydrate is broken down by the enzyme amalyase to simple sugars.

Although both the stomach and duodenum are considered under the one heading of DIGESTION, they have entirely different functions and one cannot do what the other is designed for. They work as twins, but are individuals also.

However, if the stomach is sluggish and malnourished, the duodenum will be ineffectual.

So the nutritional requirements of the duodenum are quite different from the stomach. It needs special enzyme rich food like pawpaw, pineapple and pancreatin.  The enzymes we use has all three of these foods.

The results of nutritional deficiencies –

  • We might suffer from mood swings that have to do with unbalanced
  • blood sugar
  • We could be weary.  Life feels a drag.
  • We might shy away from fatty foods (fatty indigestion)
  • Our liver might feel squeamish (feeling liverish)

Enzymes found in raw food go a long way to help our body to digest food.  Our enzymes will supply any deficiencies you may have.

When the food enzymes are destroyed by heat, our body will have to produce more to do the job. Like everything else, if we use up all our supply, one day we will run short.

3.ABSORPTION is the third stage.

smallintestineAs the chyme travels along the 25 feet long of small intestine in its windy tract, further digestion takes place and more enzymes are added by the cells along the way. The small intestine is housed in the middle of the abdomen, behind our navel.

The inside of this intestine or tubing is lined with something like 4 ½ million fingerlike projections called villi and these in turn bristle with even smaller microvilli.

Each of these villi is served by a complex system of capillaries in which is a tiny artery and vein. They use the blood stream to carry the absorbed food to the liver which is the body’s central clearing house. If these villi were spread out, they would cover the area of a tennis court.

Now you can see how necessary it is for our food to be properly digested and made into chyme. Otherwise the particles are too large for complete absorption. This is particularly important for us to remember.

Minerals are also absorbed in the small intestine through a complex system of chelation. Our mineral products are double amino acid chelated (an overcoat) to allow maximum amount of absorption.

It is here too the GNLD’s water miscible Vit. A and Vit. E are easily and totally absorbed.

The results of nutritional deficiencies –

  • Some people who suffer from celiac disease have stunted villi due to gluten allergy interfering with the digestion and absorption process.
  • Sugar may interfere with the function of the villi, so again absorption of food is affected. Our digestion must function properly for us to have good absorption.

4.CIRCULATION is the fourth stage.

See the circulation diagram. Our circulation system or stage is our bloodstream. Our heart is the pump to this system. We have 60,000 miles of blood vessels. Seven times a day the heart pumps this blood to and from various parts of our body. The blood stream carries all the wonderful nutrients needed for our health. It also carries away the waste from our cells.

It is our trucking system.   Think of the heart as the home office and from there, trucks are sent everywhere with precious cargo.

The circulation system cannot function efficiently without nutrients. It’s special need is wheat germ oil, or Vitamin E, and minerals. Honey is food good for the heart.

It also desperately requires the purest cold water fish oil from salmon to keep the blood moving smoothly and freely.

Our immune system calls on white blood cells frisking around in the blood stream, to help fight off viruses, bacteria, infections and other nasties.   To keep those white blood cells healthy, it has to have many nutrients, especially Vit. C.  And for good, healthy, rich red blood we need iron rich foods.

Our heart works continuously, but will remain faithful and contented for all our lives – provided it has a sufficient moist film or covering of calcium to allow rest and relaxation. And it needs magnesium to regulate its beat.  Cal-mag supplies both.

Can we get enough nutrients to keep our circulation in tip top condition? Unfortunately, no.  So we have to use supplements.

Again our supplements are concentrated food and as such, simply supply what is lacking in our diet.

The results of nutritional deficiencies –

  • A common one of poor food choices and lack of availability of the
  • right fish, is high blood pressure, or high cholesterol or triglycerides
  • You might have very painful veins in your legs and dark patches
  • round the ankles
  • Perhaps you bump something and behold, there is a bruise
  • Maybe you have a child who often has nosebleeds
  • Perhaps you feel up tight and your  chest could do with  some
  • lessening of pressure
  • Maybe your heart is feeling the effect of hard work and little nutrition and rest.

5.ASSIMILATION is the fifth stage.

This stage is vital. This is when all the food we have chosen to eat, digested, absorbed and circulated now goes into each cell for assimilation.  In other words, taken right into our very being.

We can be doing all the above things like choosing good food, digesting it well, absorbing it fully and our circulation is fine, but if our diet is lacking those 3 families of essential lipids and sterols, then it is impossible to assimilate that food.

6.ELIMINATION is the sixth stage.

This is the last stage. Elimination means getting rid of waste from the body.

The first place to start is from the cell. And when trillions of tiny, tiny cells start eliminating all together, life can become interesting and quite active. Other body organs which eliminate are the bowel, kidneys, lungs and the skin.

The bowel or colon is a much larger tube than the small intestine but is only 4-5 feet long. It runs round the perimeter of our abdomen and is called the large intestine.

By the time all the waste matter gets to the colon the liquid has been used.

This waste can get quite hard and solid causing constipation. So it is very important to drink plenty of water (how much?), at least 8 large glasses daily to flush both kidneys and colon.

The colon is not only a tube but it is a living muscle that has a pulsating or peristalic action which moves the waste along. A bit like a caterpillar tractor.

The colon, like every other part of our body, needs it’s special nutrients. Fibre to help keep it clean and a variety of things to keep its peristaltic action in good, active condition. Such things like prunes, rhubarb, asparagus, aniseed, alfalfa, and some herbs like licorice root, culver root and blue malva and water. As well as water, fibre and essential fats (for it is made up of cells too), it  must  also  have things  that  make the  Digestion  stage  function efficiently.  Then it must have the right flora or bacteria level for the B family of vitamins to be manufactured, so plenty of the acidophilus family has to be present.

The colon can have some embarrassing and irritating conditions as well as life threatening ones, resulting from nutritional deficiencies –

  • Some seem to have more diarrhoea than they ought
  • And how many suffer from haemorrhoids

So it is necessary to keep our colon healthy and the second stage (Digestion) is very important to Elimination. If we have problems in that stage, we will almost certainly have them in the colon.

Where we Fit

It must be clearly understood that if our bodies were not being starved of the nutrient supply from its right and proper source of food, we would not have so many people suffering from unnecessary misery.
